Important News for SOAR Visiting Astronomers

Dear Visiting Scientists:

Effective August 17, 2009, All Staff and Visiting Astronomers at SOAR will be accommodated in the dormitories at “Cerro Tololo”, due to the construction expansion and remodeling works of the AURA Hotel on Cerro Pachón which will be completed in approximately March 2010. Therefore, for the duration of the works neither the AURA Hotel nor the 20-Unit Dormitory will be usable because of the noise and safety issues inherent to a construction activity.

Visiting astronomers will travel to SOAR (about a 30 minute drive) after having lunch on Cerro Tololo, and will return at the end of the observing night in an observatory vehicle driven by the telescope operators. Evening meals and night lunches will be served on Pachón as normal.

The Southern Astrophysical Research (SOAR) Telescope is a 4.1 meter aperture telescope designed to produce the best quality images of any observatory in its class in the world. It was funded by a a partnership between the U.S. National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO), the country of Brazil, Michigan State University (MSU) and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). SOAR is situated on Cerro Pachón at an altitude of 2,700 meters (8,775 feet) above sea level, at the western edge of the peaks of the Chilean Andes.
